Falls, car accidents, and sports-related injuries are all common causes of brain and spine injuries. Internal conditions such as infection, inflammation, tumors, bleeding, or problems such as strokes or aneurysms may cause some injuries. UT Southwestern physicians have the experience and expertise to treat a wide range of brain and spine injuries. Our multidisciplinary team includes the brain and spinal cord injury specialists such as physicians and nurses, as well as physical, speech, and occupational therapists, rehabilitation psychologists, and social workers. To diagnose and assess the severity of a brain injury, we will perform a physical examination as well as other diagnostic tests such as CT or MRI scans of the brain. Concussion or mild TBI causes temporary brain cell dysfunction and necessitates rest for a full recovery. Patients can usually recover at home after being evaluated, requiring only rest, modified activities and exercises based on diagnosis, over-the-counter pain relievers, and close monitoring. If symptoms persist or worsen, or if new symptoms emerge, specialized treatment may be required. TBI of moderate to severe severity necessitates immediate medical attention. This TBIs can result in bruising, torn tissues, and brain bleeding. The UT Southwestern trauma team will work to stabilize these patients and minimize secondary damage caused by bleeding, inflammation, or decreased oxygen supply to the brain.
