A spinal tumor is a growth of abnormal tissue within or around the spinal cord and/or spinal column. These cells grow and multiply inexorably, seemingly unaffected by the mechanisms that regulate normal cells. Spinal tumors can be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) (cancerous). Primary tumors develop in the spine or spinal cord, whereas metastatic or secondary tumors develop when cancer spreads from another location to the spine. An abnormal development of tissue inside or around the spinal cord and/or spinal column is referred to as a spinal tumor. These cells appear to be unhindered by the systems that control regular cells as they proliferate and replicate endlessly. Both benign (not cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) spinal tumors are possible. While metastatic or secondary tumors form when disease spreads from another site to the spine, primary tumors form in the spine or spinal cord.
