The conventional definition of a seizure is a sudden behaviour change caused by a temporary shift in the brain's electrical activity. The brain normally produces a consistent pattern of tiny electrical impulses. These impulses travel throughout the body on chemical messengers called neurotransmitters that travel along neurons, the brain's network of nerve cells. Epilepsy, which is characterised by an imbalance in the electrical rhythms of the brain, frequently manifests as recurrent seizures. The usual electrical rhythm is disrupted in patients with seizures by sudden and synchronised electrical energy bursts that may briefly alter their consciousness, movements, or sensations when a person has at least two unrelated seizures not caused by a different recognised medical ailment.
