A spinal tumour is a growth that appears either inside the spinal column's bones or in the spinal canal. A spinal tumour that starts inside the spinal cord or the covering of the spinal cord is referred to as a spinal cord tumour or an intradural tumour (dura). Vertebral tumours are tumours that affect the vertebrae, the spine's bony structure. Depending on where they are in relation to the spinal cord's protective membranes, there are three basic types of spinal cord tumours. Intramedullary cancers, such as gliomas, astrocytomas, or ependymomas, start in the spinal cord's own cells. The supporting structure that surrounds the spinal cord, the vertebrae, is where tumours from other parts of the body can spread (metastasize).
