A spinal tumor is a growth of abnormal tissue within or around the spinal cord and/or spinal column. These cells grow and multiply inexorably, seemingly unaffected by the mechanisms that regulate normal cells. Spinal tumors can be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) (cancerous). Primary tumors develop in the spine or spinal cord, whereas metastatic or secondary tumors develop when cancer spreads from another location to the spine. Spinal tumors can develop anywhere along your spinal column, including your vertebrae, spinal cord, and the tissues that surround your spinal cord. The majority of spinal tumors are the result of cancer metastasis, or cancer that has spread from another part of your body to your spine. A spinal tumor is an abnormal mass of cells that grows within or around your spinal cord and/or spinal column. The spine (backbone) is a long, flexible bone column that protects your spinal cord. It runs from the base of your skull to your tailbone, which is part of your pelvis.
